The current political deadlock in Timor-Leste is slowing down national development, according to Oxfam in Timor-Leste following a press conference hosted today.
Oxfam urged the government to find a solution to the current political deadlock because people’s livelihoods are at stake, following the disapproval of the revised General State Budget for 2020 earlier in January.
In a letter to the President of the Republic of Timor-Leste, Oxfam urged the President to:
- Continue his open and regular communication with relevant parties.
- Secure and strengthen the normal functioning of democratic institutions, especially the provision of basic services such as education, health and access to clean water.
- Use his full authority to take practical decisions based on the Constitution, laws and democratic norms.
Oxfam is especially concerned about the suspension of new infrastructure projects; an increase in unemployment; declining household incomes; the provision of basic services; and the lack of transparency within the ongoing political situation.
“As a civil society organisation working with the people of Timor-Leste since 1975, Oxfam is dedicated to support the development of this nation through our programs.” said Fernando da Costa, Partnership and Influencing Senior Manager.
“Our mission is to have a country that enjoys prosperity and equality, where everyone, women and men, can actively participate in the development process and enjoys the well-being that flows from the nation’s development.” said da Costa.
“We would like to encourage everyone to continue carrying out their role at their best to serve people of this beloved country, Timor-Leste, in moving forward.” said Da Costa.
Oxfam in Timor-Leste currently works with nearly 20 local partners through the pillars of livelihoods, resilience, and inclusive development.
