On 16 June 2011, the International Labour Conference of the International Labour Organization adopted the Convention concerning decent work for domestic workers, which is also referred to as the Domestic Workers Convention. This Convention recognises domestic work is work, and domestic workers are, like other workers, entitled to decent work.
The adoption represented a momentous day for domestic workers around the globe. With participation and support from civil society organisations, domestic workers celebrated their recognition as workers who are entitled to labour rights and protections by the international community.
In Cambodia, Oxfam together with Solidary Centre (SC) and Independent Democracy of Informal Economy Association (IDEA) this year organise a public forum with the objective to promote social protection for domestic workers in Cambodia, while commemorating the 8 years anniversary of the adoption of the ILO Convention. The forum will bring together a total number of 250 participants, including domestic workers, street vendors, and representatives of households’ employers, members of transport workers, as well as representatives from the Royal Government of Cambodia and development partners and will facilitate interactions among all participants. The opportunity also serves to discuss the situation of domestic workers and their challenges, as well as sharing experiences and lessons learnt in order to formulate suggestions for further appropriate measures and solutions by relevant policy stakeholders.
On this occasion, we would like to cordially inform our respectful friends and colleagues in the media and would like to seek their support in covering this important celebration so that we, together, promote domestic workers’ rights in Cambodia.
