Oxfam in Kenya awarded the most collaborative NGO by Kenya Revenue Authority for its work on Fiscal Justice.
Tax Justice has been an anchor pillar of work under the Governance and Accountability programme for Oxfam in Kenya since 2015 with the rollout of the new Country Strategy. Recognizing the importance of the role of Domestic Resource Mobilization to sustainable development, particularly in the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals as well as to the sovereignty of Kenya.
Oxfam in Kenya has been implementing the Tax Justice programme in Nairobi, Turkana, and Wajir which seeks to strengthen revenue mobilization, allocation, and expenditure through fair, equitable, progressive and responsive policies and practice. Oxfam in Kenya has called for the government to strengthen efforts to generate revenue domestically in order to deliver services to citizens. In this regard, Oxfam in Kenya has continuously advocated for a progressive tax regime that does not skew the burden of taxation onto the poor. In achieving the change in the fiscal regime This has been done in collaboration with a variety of partners such as National Taxpayers Association, Diocese of Lodwar, ALDE, Inuka Kenya, Africa's Voices Foundation, International Budget Partnerships Kenya, Strathmore Tax Research Centre, Institute for Public Finance Kenya, the B Team, University of Nairobi, School of Law, East Africa Tax and Governance Network, Tax Justice Network Africa, Fight Inequality Alliance - Kenya, Juliani and Government. We have been continuously engaging with the Kenya Revenue Authority through consistently presenting research reports, linking the Authority with partners and communities in Nairobi, Turkana, Wajir as well as across the country through radio.
Oxfam in Kenya has year on year participated in the KRA Annual Tax Summit, being one of the few consistent Non-Governmental Organizations to facilitate dialogue in panels through this platform. Due to this ongoing collaboration, on 31st October 2018, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) during its taxpayers’ appreciation month, gave an award to Oxfam in Kenya. The essence of which demonstrates the consistency and commitment by Oxfam in Kenya to walk the talk of engaging with the right actors to realize our vision of challenging poverty and inequality.
